The port is located in Benete Bay
which is an environmentally sensitive area. Cargoes handled are bulk and
general cargo.

LOCATION: The port is located on the SW coast of Sumbawa Island on the SE end of the Selat Alas
in the Lesser Sumbawa Island. Indonesia

APPROACHES:
The approach channel is 1.5 nautical miles long, 0.6
nautical miles wide, has depth 23.0 m. with bottom sand and rock. The basin
measures 1.0 nautical miles and has depth 20.0 m.
PILOTAGE:
Not compulsory.
There are no Government Pilots.
The Pilot boards
in position Lat. 8o 53’ 06” S, Long. 116o 42’ 30” E,
bearing 090o (T) x 2.0 nautical miles from the entrance to the bay.
If the berth is unoccupied and vessel
arrives in working hours, vessel will berth on arrival. Vessels arriving to
berth the bulk berth during break times
or if the berth is occupied are advised to drift in the Selat Alas until the
Pilot boards or proceed to the anchorage and wait instructions.
Pilot ladder 2-3 m. above the water on the
lee side, conforming to international requirements.
ANCHORAGES: No Anchorage area at Benete bay.
RESTRICTIONS:
All vessels calling at Benete Bay
are prohibited from dropping anchor inside the bay due to the proximity of live
coral reefs.
Water Cooling Systems: The only water cooling water to be
discharged in the bay is water taken on board while in the bay.
MAX. SIZE: Bulk: Draft 14.0 m. and air draft
15.0m. LOA : 198 mtr
HEALTH: Free pratique will be granted by the quarantine officer once vessel is
secured in the berth.
Ballast Water Form (not reproduced):
Further to this, PT NNT will require detailed
information on the ballast water on board. Contact ship’s Agent for further
details.
VHF:
Vessels should forward their ETA to the Port Authority
at least 3 hours prior to arrival at the pilot station. Benete Coast Radio
Station listens on Channel 16 and works on Channel 12.
Working Hours:
2300-0400 and 0500-0900 GMT, 0700-1200 and 1300-1700 local
time.
1100-1600 and 1700-2100 GMT, 1900-2400 and 0100-0500 local
time.
TUGS:
Two tugs (“Serverwell Steady” and “Serverwll Steable”)
available. The two tugs will be used for vessels berthing at the bulk berth.
Mooring Boats: One mooring boat (“Tenggara 2”) available.

HANDLING FACILITIES:
The cargo jetty has platform area measuring 94.1 m. x
20m. and depth 12.0 m. with a causeway length 171.75m.
Cargo handling Equipment:
The port has four
top lifters/reach stackers, three forklifts and seven trailers.
CRANES: None available.
BULK CARGO FACILITIES:
The concentrates jetty is located in position Lat. 8o
53’ 39.9” S, Long. 116o 44’ 34.8’ E, has length 240.56 m.
(including dolphins), depth 14.0 m., draft 14.0 m. (tidal allowance) with max.
air draft 15.0 m. The jetty has five berthing dolphins and two mooring dolphins
one at each end approximately 40 m. from the jetty end and set back
approximately 40o from the plain of the berthing face. Vessels berth
either side alongside.
Loading Equipment:
One bulk conveyor with outreach 40.0 m. from centre
point of loader, rated at 1,200 tonnes/hr. but loading rate for concentrate is
900-1,000 tonnes /hr., handles copper concentrate ore piped from the Batu Hijau
Mine 17.6 km. inland. Vessels are required to shift for loading different
holds.
BALLAST:
Vessels wishing to discharge ballast water in the bay
shall change their ballast water mid-ocean en-route from the last port of call.
Failure to do this, will result in the vessel being sent back to sea to
deballast prior to resuming loading.
The Environment Surveyor will check the engine room,
take ballast water samples, check salinity of ballast water sample and check on
deck after the vessels has docked. Strict rules are in place regarding ballast
water. Contact ship’s agent.
POLLUTION:
Benete Bay is an environmentally sensitive area and
PT NNT adopts a zero tolerance approach to the discharge of any fluids from the
vessel that has not been passed as suitable to discharge. Contact ship’s agent.

TIME: GMT plus 8 hours.
WEATHER:
Tidal Range: All tides are referenced to ISLW. Tidal range
is 3.1 m. at HHWS and 0.03 m. at LLWS.
Current: The surface current ranges from 0.1-0.73 m./sec. flowing NW or SE
along the Selat Alas.
Wind: Average wind speed is 1.8 m./sec. with max. wind speed 10 m./sec. in
September.
GENERAL: Gangway: Vessels berth port side alongside. Shore gangway is used and
starboard side alongside ship’s gangway is used.
SHIPMASTER’S REPORT: May 2004.
Vessels: Bulk carrier, 22,000d.w. tones, LOA 157.5 m., beam 25.04 m.
Location: The port is located in the SE coast of the Selat Alas.
Documents:
Customs clearance, agency and immigration for
clearance inwards and outwards,is the same as all Indonesian and International
ports. Two Customs officers, two Port Health officers, two immigration
officers, two port officials from the Harbor Master’s office and ship’s Agent
boarded the vessel on arrival.
The ship’s Agent was very helpful and
assisted in the finishing of all paperwork when dealing with the Port Health
officials, they will check the Indonesian health book (Green Book) and they
will issue free pratique.
Immigration officers checked all the passports.
The Harbor Master’s representatives checked
that all the ship’s original certificates, requiring
copies of the certificates
for the Harbor Master’s office.
Approaches:
Our vessel arrived in Benete Bay
and established contact with Benete Port Radio on VHF Channel 12, two hours
prior to arrival. Vessels can drift 2-3 nautical miles west of the bay, where
the depth of the water is sufficient.
Pilotage:
The Pilot (Docking
Master) boarded our vessel 2 hours after arrival from a tug approximately 1
nautical mile off the entrance. He is experienced and familiar with the port.
Tugs :
2 x 1, 280 b.h.p. tugs (“Serverwell Steady” and
“Serverwell Steable”) with two twin screw fixed propelellers assisted in maneuver.
Tugs were available throughout 24 hours and the ship’s
Agent can call them at any time to assist during shifting or in the case of
strong wind and or swell. As per ship’s Agent’s statement, tugs assistance was
free of charge.
Mooring Boats:
One mooring boat (“Tenggara2”) will assist during the
mooring operation running both head and stern lines.
Ballasting:
Ballast water exchange form, checked by the
Environmental Protection officer. He compared the position mentioned on the form
with the exact location on the chart to confirm the water depth during ballast
water exchange. Vessel shall not discharge any fluids in to the sea while in
Benete bay.
Shore Leave:
Crew members were allowed ashore, no shore leave
passes were required and the ship’s Agent can arrange for a launch to take crew
members ashore.
Safe Manning:
Vessel should retain enough crew members onboard at
all times to assist for shifting and safe handling of the vessel.
